My wife is a birder. We have numerous birdhouses, feeders, and bird baths around our home. After years of bird success, I wanted to see if I could build a better birdhouse. First I use red cedar. Red cedar will not rot, most insects will not eat it, and it is usually good for 25 years or more. I do not use any toxic paint, stain or sealers. The only sealer I use is food-safe mineral oil. As you can see in the pictures it makes the wood just pop. Most of the construction uses dowels as I keep the metal count down to only 4 screws and a keyhole bracket. Also, all the metal is on the back so when hanging you will never see the metal. The birdhouse is 10.5 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 5.25 inches deep. You can select the hole size based on what type of birds you want to house.
You can also personalize it. This one says Home Sweet Home but as long I have space you can say what you want. It does make a great house warming or wedding gift.
